It is with great sadness that I'm posting to inform those of you still reading the comm that one of our own, yoiebear, died yesterday. Her mother informed me yesterday afternoon she was in the hospital after having stopped breathing during work on a molar at the dentist's, and by the time they were able to get her on life support, she'd just been without oxygen for too long. She is an organ donor, though, so she will be able to help someone(s) else with a second chance at life.

She was about three weeks away from her 34th birthday. I've known her for several years; met her through POTC on LJ, in fact. Those of you who read and enjoyed her fic know how much she enjoyed these movies (and Will!), but she had a lot of interests. She was a newspaper reporter and freelance journalist for several years with an interest in politics and music, loved to travel, had a bad attempted English accent she thought was actually pretty good (LOL), was working on finishing up a novel written almost entirely on her phone, and was generally a pretty great human being. She will be missed.

On a whim I went and did a search on Google for Will Turner. I don't even know why, but I guess I missed him. :-)

One of the sugestions from Google was: will turner pirates of the caribbean 5. Apparently there are rumours going around about this. Nothing confirmed, but still...

Hmm, I thought... Could that really work?

And when reading on some of the hits I got, I guess it could. The most interesting being the post from IGN, that takes up both pros and cons for further Pirate-movies and getting Will Turner back.

What We Want From Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - Can Pirates 5 live up to the original?

I am torn. Of COURSE I want more Will Turner! (Who doesn't?) I am just afraid they'll fuck up the character, you know? :-P Which would be a sad thing indeed... I really hope he'll stay on as Captain of the Flying Dutchman... I have a thing for that, for some reason...

ANYWAY!

Anyone still in this community? And if you are, what do you think? More Will or not?

Me? Five years ago I was in Chicago.

It's hard to believe it's been five years, isn't it? To everyone who came to the first TurnerCon- it was great, and I had such a good time (Pirates take over the boat tour! Pirates take over the train! Pirates take over the bus! Pirates walk all over Chicago trying to find food! Pirates watch POTC and only getting told to be quiet one of the nights!)

So, I'm going to leave you all with a picture of all of us at the Sear's Tower at night, on Nov 1st.

I kinda wish I could do it all over again, to be honest.

I'm going to post this across some communities I'm in that deal with fanfic, if the mods don't mind (I'm pretty sure the mods here are OK with it). One of my favorite current authors, John Scalzi, addresses a new program Amazon has apparently set up in which people can "publish" their fanfic and have the chance to be paid for it.

I'm just curious in the comments about your thoughts on this business model, as well as the idea of publishing fanfic as-is (as opposed to pulling a James and changing the names and situations a la "Fifty Shades" for profit. I know fans who draw or paint or make music, or almost any other product other than writing, can find a way to make a profit off that kind of hobby that we fanfic writers have not been able to similarly enjoy, for a long time now. But to be honest, it's never occurred to me to want to sell my fanfic. The whole point of it is to retain the freedom to write whatever the hell I want, whenever I want, on whatever topic I please. I've sold plenty of my writing for-profit and I have to say, it's nice to retain an outlet where there are people who will read my stuff without having the right to dictate what I do with it ... which you get when money enters the picture. (This is not to say I see anything wrong with selling fiction or nonfiction for a living - I wouldn't do it if I thought it was bad. But there's writing I'm willing to tinker with and change for a dollar, and writing I won't.)

Anyway, I'll let John do the talking now. If you don't want to go to the link, I'll put it below, too (though you may wish to follow the link so you can find the link to the actual Amazon business plan link):

The Twitters are abuzz today about Amazon’s new “Kindle Worlds” program, in which people are allowed to write and then sell through Amazon their fan fiction for certain properties owned by Alloy Entertainment, including Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars, with more licenses expected soon. I’ve had a quick look at the program on Amazon’s site, and I have a couple of immediate thoughts on it. Be aware that these thoughts are very preliminary, i.e., I reserve the right to have possibly contradictory thoughts about the program later, when I think (and read) about it more. Also note that these are my personal thoughts and do not reflect the positions or policies of SFWA, of which I am (still but not for much longer) president.

The rest cut for spaceCollapse )

HI guys! I know I don't really post here though I've been watching the comm for some time. I have a Will dilemma though and I figured I'd bring it here where it might interest some people.
I was talking to a friend and we were sorting our favorite characters into Hogwarts Houses and I started to wonder what house would Will go into? I feel like he has traits from all four, especially by the end of AWE, but I'm not sure where he'd go best. So what do you think? I've made a poll for your convenience but if you want to leave a comment with your reasoning or just some thoughts that would be awesome.

What Hogwarts House should Will be in?
